HIGH SCHOOL TEAM POSTERS
CASE STUDY
For this particular poster, the Apple Valley Boys Swim Team wanted a Jaws theme, using the famous line “We’re gonna need a bigger boat” as the headline. They wanted it to look like they were all on a rickety fishing boat, like the one in the movie.
These types of requests, while making the poster fun to do, do make it more difficult, for it requires me to find a boat that not only fits the theme, but also to find one that is part of public domain so that we don’t have to pay for one.
The images to the left are some of the ones that I used to create this poster.
For the first round the main emphasis is finding a usable boat image, one that not only fits all 26 swimmers, but also fits within the dimensions of the panoramic poster and is recognizable as a boat. I also need to cut out all of the boys and place them within the poster, making sure that they live realistically within the poster and are proportionate to each other.
The next round involves adding shadow to the swimmers so that they feel grounded and are immersed within the image. I also added water and changed out the sky so that it would feel more dynamic.
For the third round I added the extra elements that play off the Jaws theme: the shark fin, the barrels and the damage to the boat. I also included “AVHS 2018 19” as the boat’s registration number, a reference to the school and year. The mascot for Apple Valley High School is the eagle, so I included one flying in the background.
The final touch is adding in the headline and all of the swimmers’ names to bring it all together.
